Why is Keanu Reeves not in John Wick 4?

Making a movie is a lot of work. It can be a grueling (if rewarding) experience for everyone, yet it’s safe to say that the level of exhaustion Keanu Reeves feels after filming a John Wick installment is profound. Reeves notoriously pours his heart and soul into filming the action-heavy franchise, which included performing one of the series’ most massively intricate fight scenes in the original 2014 John Wick with a 103-degree temperature (revealed by co-directors David Leitch and Chad Stahelski in the director’s commentary for the film.) “We were pretty dialed in that it was gonna be Keanu,” Stahelski said.

  • He actually had the flu and about a 103-degree fever.
  • He had it rough, all the days to be ill.
  • You couldn’t even get him to sit down.
  • He just did take after take.
  • You can’t film sequences like this unless you’ve got a cast member who goes through so much training, and that’s Keanu.
  • Best guy in the business for that.” Yet by the time 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4 rolled around, Reeves was ready to put in one more final momentous performance and call it a day.

Speaking with Collider, John Wick producer Basil Iwanyk revealed that Reeves was ready for Wick to be retired—permanently—via a noble death at the end of Chapter 4. “After the second, third, and fourth movie, making these films is so exhausting, and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally,” Iwanyk told Collider,

By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it. He was like, ‘I wanna be definitively killed at the end of this movie. We were like, ‘You know, we’ll leave a 10% little opening,” Iwanyk said. John Wick: Chapter 4 ended with what appeared to be a very noble death, and even some peace, for the hardest-working semi-retired assassin in the business.

Wick faced off against Donnie Yen’s Caine in a duel; the winner would be freed forever from the clutches of the High Table. In the third round of the duel, Wick is seemingly fatally wounded, and after one final coup de grace against Bill Skarsgård’s insipid Marquis, he apparently dies on the steps of the Sacré Coeur in Paris, expiring while seeing a vision of his late wife, Helen.

The film ends with his old friends Winston (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) standing by his graveside. Director Chad Stahelski had already revealed to Empire that they’d tested an alternate ending in which Wick survived the duel, but audiences preferred the ambiguous ending that included John’s grave.

So, Reeves asked for Wick to be really and truly killed, and his team obliged with a beautiful but ambiguous ending, leaving open more than enough wiggle room to start exploring John Wick: Chapter 5, Reeves himself has revised his original desire for Wick to definitively be killed by telling Entertainment Weekly he’s somewhat open to the idea of returning, with caveats.

  • I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to lean on ‘never say never,'” Reeves told EW,
  • I mean, I wouldn’t do a John Wick film without Chad Stahelski.
  • We’d have to see what that looked like.
  • For me, it feels really right that John Wick finds peace.” Perhaps he’ll find peace, for real this time, at the end of Chapter 5.

How much time has passed between John Wick 3 and 4?

JOHN WICK’s Incredibly Short Timeline, Confirmed The John Wick franchise is jam-packed, full of action and non-stop twists and turns. It has also been around since 2014. Yes, John Wick is almost 10 years old. How is that for a mind-blowing fun fact? And the result of that is that it may seem like a lot of time has passed in John Wick’s world.

But actually, John Wick ‘s timeline is incredibly short. Good thing Keanu Reeves has the qualities of an ageless vampire. Director officially confirmed John Wick ‘s timeline and the super-short in-universe time that passes. But, he does add there’s a little room for variability. So how long is John Wick ‘s timeline really? Speaking to, Chad Stahelski shared: Well, we figured the first three movies almost happened in like a week, week and a half, somewhere in there.

That’s my version, I think Keanu’s is a little different, and I think this is like six months later. So within a year, I think it all happens. I would say almost within seven to eight months. It’s hard to believe such a monumental franchise has unfolded in so short a time.

  • We’ve been with John Wick for almost 10 years, but John Wick himself has only existed for a fraction of that time in his world.
  • But that just goes to show you that a good story is a good story.
  • We wonder what Keanu Reeves’ vision of John Wick ‘s timeline looks like.
  • But we assume it can’t be that much longer.

John Wick ‘s producers Erica Lee and Basil Iwanyk also offered their take on John Wick ‘s timeline. Iwanyk noted, “I think the first three are set over three weeks.” John Wick 4, meanwhile, finds its place on the timeline, “eight months later, or something like that.” According to, Lee shared “the length of time had to be enough for Wick to heal from his injuries, but to still be angry at what Winston and the High Table had done to him.” With all that in mind, John Wick: Chapter 4 ‘s time skip is a huge one for the franchise.

Is John Wick 4 the last one?

Does John Wick die in Chapter 4? – Winston and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) visit Wick’s gravesite. We can see that his final wishes were respected – “John Wick, loving husband”. The Bowery King wonders whether Wick is currently in “heaven or hell”.

Winston’s response? “Who knows.” The trace of a smirk on his face is all that’s needed to fuel a hundred fan theories over Wick’s ultimate fate. And then there’s the well-timed cut to Wick’s pitbull – adopted at the end of the first film – suddenly snapping his head to look at something, or someone, off in the distance.

He’s noticeably restless for the rest of the scene. Could Wick have faked his death? For director Chad Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, they currently feel as though the ending is pretty definitive, Whether you like it or not, Wick is dead – for now. “We had the opportunity because of the audience Chapter 3, and we were like, ‘What was the Why ?'” Reeves explained. Lionsgate Wick doesn’t believe he can have a ‘good death’, but his actions at the end of Chapter 4 might be as close as he can get: he saves a dog and the life of a former ally/friend, while protecting Winston too. Of course, there’s enough ambiguity in the ending that Wick could technically still be available.

Stahelski has also revealed that they had shot a different ending scene that was more ambiguous, and that’s why you see the dog look up. Stahelski is more than happy to leave it up to the audience for now. “These movies are supposed to be mythological fables, and there are consequences. When you do bad things, bad things happen,” he told Rolling Stone in March 2023.

“If there is another way for John to get out of this, or another way to have a satisfying conclusion to this particular journey, I’m happy to hear it. But you can’t do a whole series about consequence and fate without showing consequence and fate. “You have to bring it full-circle.

Did Keanu Reeves quit John Wick?

× Lionsgate ” John Wick ” producer Basil Iwanyk told Collider that Keanu Reeves begged the team behind the long-running action franchise to kill him off at the end of ” John Wick: Chapter 4,” It was par for the course for Reeves, who is so physically drained after filming each “John Wick” installment that it’s tough to return for more.

In this case, the producers once again did not entirely listen to their star. “After the second, third, and fourth movie, making these films is so exhausting and it destroys Keanu, physically and emotionally,” Iwanyk said. “By the end, he’s always like, ‘I can’t do this again,’ and we agree with him. The guy is just a shell of himself because he just goes off and goes for it.

  • John gets shot in the third round of the duel and seemingly dies on the steps of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur while seeing a vision of his late wife, Helen.
  • The film then cuts to a a final scene of Winston (Ian McShane) and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) visiting John’s gravestone.
  • In an interview with Empire magazine earlier this year, director Chad Stahelski revealed for the first time that a more concrete ending to the action tentpole was filmed and tested.

In this version of the film, there was no question that John Wick survived the events of the duel. “We had a different ending,” Stahelski said. “You actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending.” The ambiguous ending of “John Wick: Chapter 4” has led many to wonder if Reeves will return for a fifth “John Wick” movie.

  1. A “John Wick 5” now seems like more of a possibility given that John’s survival at the end of “Chapter 4” appears to be questionable.
  2. I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to lean on ‘never say never,'” Reeves told Entertainment Weekly after “Chapter 4” released about making another sequel.
  3. I mean, I wouldn’t do a ‘John Wick’ film without Chad Stahelski.

We’d have to see what that looked like. For me, it feels really right that John Wick finds peace.” “John Wick Chapter 4” is available to stream on Hulu with Starz add-on.

Is John Wick 5 confirmed?

John Wick 5 was confirmed to be in early development in May 2023, but you might not want to get too excited about a new movie. In July 2023, Stahelski – who has directed all four John Wick movies to date – said that he didn’t know that a fifth movie would happen,

  1. However, as he told Inverse in October 2023, he’s not against the idea.
  2. I have notebooks and notebooks of shit behind me, John Wicks 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
  3. We have ideas for days.
  4. We just don’t have the story locked,” Stahelski explained.
  5. I have no interest in doing the cash grab of bringing John Wick back for something.

Is he a character I like? Of course. And if I did a couple of John Wick movies, great. Keanu would do one again in a second if we had a good story.” Given how John Wick: Chapter 4 ended, it’s perhaps not a surprise that we might not get a fifth movie. Lionsgate

Is Winston John Wick’s father?

WARNING: this post contains spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4 We’ve covered the scene that inspired Keanu Reeves to make John Wick: Chapter 4 and the rare post-credits scene that’s worth sticking around for, but there’s something that happens between those two moments that’s worth discussing, as well.

  1. After John Wick is killed in his duel against the Marquis in Paris (or more actually, his duel against Caine and then John blows the Marquis’ brains out before succumbing to his wounds), the movie cuts back to New York, where he’s buried alongside his wife, Helen.
  2. At the cemetery, Winston rests his hand on John’s tombstone and says “farewell, my son” in Russian.

Is Winston John’s actual father, or a father-like figure? The latter is more likely. For one thing, Winston has a tattoo of the Ruska Roma syndicate on his wrist; he and John are part of the same crime family. Winston also has paternal affection for John — or Jonathan, as he, and only he, calls him.

So, is Winston John’s biological father? Unlikely. “Fourth John Wick, you think, ‘Same old,’ but it’s not,” Ian McShane, who plays Winston, told Screenrant about Chapter 4, “It’s expanded, the relationships have got deeper, they’ve gotten better; you understand more about the world. It’s matured, but I think that’s due to the writer and Chad staying with it.

Chad directing all the movies. It wouldn’t be the same. That’s key to it, absolutely.” For more on John Wick: Chapter 4, check out our interview with director Chad Stahelski,

How old is John Wick in John Wick 1?

Writing – During the early 2000s, Derek Kolstad struggled to gain recognition as a screenwriter, producing up to eight screenplays per year, none of which went into production. Although he continued to write, he stopped pursuing it as a full time career until his wife encouraged him to try again.

Olstad secured a manager and wrote 60 screenplays before finding success with the low-budget action films One in the Chamber (2012) and The Package (2013). Over four days in either 2012 or 2013, Kolstad wrote a spec script titled Scorn, the inspiration for which came from two “terrible revenge movies” he had watched.

The script’s story centered around the character John Wick, a long-retired hitman in his mid-60s to mid-70s who is forced back into his former life. John was modeled on actors such as Clint Eastwood and Paul Newman, The script included elements such as John’s long-deceased wife, his elderly dog, the Continental, Charon, Winston, and the underworld gold coins; it had a kill count of 11 compared to the film’s several dozen.

John was portrayed as an underworld legend who had been absent for decades, causing younger criminals to dismiss tales of his deeds. Kolstad aimed to explore the character as “the worst man in existence” who finds and loses salvation through love and events that followed this. He had difficulty determining the incident that would lead to John’s return, ultimately choosing his dog’s murder over the cliché of the killing of the protagonist’s wife and family.

Kolstad focused his efforts on the first act, believing a solid opening would make later acts easier to write. The draft was influenced by the variety of action films of which Kolstad was fond, including Aliens (1986), Predator (1987), and Die Hard (1988); and revenge films, westerns, and neo-noir films such as Miller’s Crossing (1990).

Kolstad included black comedy because he found that levity added to the characters’ humanity, drawing influence from silent comedy actors such as Buster Keaton, Harold Lloyd, Charlie Chaplin, and Roscoe Arbuckle ; and his favorite animated television series, including Rick and Morty and SpongeBob SquarePants,

After garnering feedback from family and agents, Kolstad made minor changes and the spec script was put out for sale.

Is John Wick Winston’s son?

Why John Wick 4’s Winston Twist Likely Isn’t True – While the John Wick franchise is great at world-building, there has been nothing in the previous three movies that hinted toward Winston being John’s biological father. Though the pair grew closer with each consecutive release, they were nothing more than allies in the John Wick series.

Even if John is one of the most feared assassins in the world, it seems unlikely that Winston would have ever let his own son get so deep into this extremely violent underworld. On the other hand, Winston did give John a head start when he became excommunicado in John Wick: Chapter 2, which is a favor he would likely never grant anyone else.

The shared tattoo, the Russian farewell, and Winston’s use of “son” are all suspect, but there is an alternative explanation for each of these clues. Winston likely knows Russian due to his ties with the Ruska Roma. The Ruska Roma is a huge syndicate, and it makes sense that Winston would have worked with them at some point.

How much was Keanu Reeves paid for John Wick 4?

Keanu Reeves Has Made $22 Million For Playing John Wick – Keanu Reeves has made roughly $22 million in total for playing John Wick, the bulk of which is from his $15 million John Wick: Chapter 4 salary. It’s a testament to how successful the John Wick franchise has become given that Reeves’ salary for John Wick: Chapter 4 is almost as much as the first movie’s $20 million budget. Reeves’ salary for each movie was:

$1-2 million for John Wick $2-2.5 million for John Wick: Chapter 2 $2-2.5 million for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum $15 million for John Wick: Chapter 4

Those are the upfront salaries Reeves earned for each John Wick movie, but he could have negotiated a percentage of backend points too, which is a cut of the movies’ gross profits. This wouldn’t be out of the ordinary, and it’s something that Reeves has negotiated for previous movies too.

  • That means that Reeves could have made considerably more than $22 million in total.
  • This possibility is significantly more likely given that Reeves seemingly didn’t get a salary increase for John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum despite John Wick: Chapter 2’s huge success.
  • Eanu Reeves hasn’t finished earning paychecks for playing John Wick, as the actor will reprise the role in 2024’s Ballerina, a John Wick spinoff starring Ana de Armas as the titular female assassin.

The movie takes place in the eight months between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4, It isn’t clear how large of a role Reeves will have in the spinoff, and it hasn’t been disclosed how much the actor is getting paid either, but it’s likely in the seven-figure range once again.

Who is John Wick married to in real life?

Is Keanu Reeves married? – The John Wick star is currently not married. Though the couple is in a long-term relationship, they are not in a hurry to get married. In fact, Grant has her own views on the idea of tying the knot. “Love at every level is deeply important to my identity,” she told Vogue before joking, “How’s that for dodging the question?” She continued, “I do not believe that isolation is the way.

Is John Wick 4 good or bad?

“John Wick: Chapter 4 has some of the best action scenes ever made, but its bloated 169 minute runtime ultimately ruins the overall experience.” Pros

Features some of the best action scenes ever Great cast of returning and new actors Lean, cohesive story

Cons

It’s just too damn long Fight scenes overstay their welcome

There’s no franchise more scrappy and likable than the John Wick movies of the last decade. The first film, 2014’s John Wick, was a low-budget affair, helmed by an unproven director, stuntman Chad Stahelski, and starring a then-unbankable Keanu Reeves.

  1. The movie did OK in theaters but found a more appreciative fanbase on home video.
  2. John Wick: Chapter 2 and John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum added to the growing Wick mythos, upping the action quotient, adding more stars (Halle Berry! Laurence Fishburne! Even Angelica Huston got into the mix.), and becoming more successful commercially and critically with each release.

It’s been four years since the last movie, and the love and appreciation for the franchise have only increased since then. With John Wick: Chapter 4, the series reaches its apex point and gives you exactly what you want: more action, more death-defying stunts, more exotic locales, more murders that bend the rules of biology and physics, more sad Keanu, more, more, more.

Who is Mr Nobody in John Wick 4?

  1. At the end of the film, Reeves’ Wick sacrifices himself in a Paris-set gun duel with his old friend Caine, played by Donnie Yen,
  2. Instead of using his last bullet to kill his buddy, a badly-wounded Wick instead murders Bill Skarsgård ‘s villainous Marquis Vincent de Gramont.

Murray Close/Lionsgate In a new interview with Empire, however, franchise director Chad Stahelski revealed that fans nearly saw a much different conclusion to the franchise’s fourth installment, one in which Wick survived his epic ordeal.

So it was very clear that he was still alive. When EW asked the actor around the time of the film’s release if Reeves could imagine reviving the character, he replied, “I don’t know, I guess I’m going to have to lean on never say never, I mean, I wouldn’t do a John Wick film without Chad Stahelski.

  1. We’d have to see what that looked like.
  2. For me, it feels really right that John Wick finds peace.” Stahelski also hinted at the possibility that John Wick might not have died in the film.
  3. Let’s just say John Wick has found a way to be at peace,” Stahelski told EW,
  4. What’s the only way John could have gotten out? He’s got to make everyone think he’s dead, or he has to be dead, or he has to kill off a part of his persona.

Will there be Keanu Reeves in John Wick 5?

Summary –

Producer Basil Iwanyk is confident a John Wick 5 will be made at some point in the future, though isn’t looking to rush its development. If there is another John Wick movie, it will be a completely different story and not necessarily a continuation of the previous four movies. The timeline and direction are still unknown. While fans debate whether another movie is necessary, there are plans for a spinoff called Ballerina featuring Reeves and other franchise actors in cameo roles, expanding the universe without undoing John Wick’s powerful ending.

After plenty of back and forth on if the sequel will happen, franchise producer Basil Iwanyk weighs in on whether John Wick 5 is moving forward. Despite the latest movie ending with Keanu Reeves’ eponymous character seemingly meeting his end, Lionsgate announced two months after Chapter 4 ‘s release that they were moving forward with a fifth movie, looking to capitalize on the franchise-high reviews and box office numbers.

Reeves and director Chad Stahelski have been more cautious in the possibility of continuing Wick’s story, acknowledging they are open to making more, but feeling uncertain of how to return. In honor of the movie’s Oscars campaign, Screen Rant spoke exclusively with Basil Iwanyk to take a look at John Wick: Chapter 4 and beyond.

When asked about being approached with the idea of Reeves dying in the new movie, not only did the franchise producer reveal that Reeves has been pushing for it for multiple movies, but that he’s still confident a John Wick 5 could be made, while also teasing when he thinks the story’s timeline would pick up.

See what Iwanyk shared below: So I think that what I love about the end of John Wick 4 is, if this means that there’s never another John Wick movie, it’s a nice elegant way of ending it, right? If there is another John Wick movie, which I do believe there will be, we don’t know what it is yet, but I do believe.

I do feel like it will be a completely other book. If these movies were four chapters, you kind of blame it on the metaphor. The next John Wick will be another book. It won’t be like six months later from John Wick 4. We just don’t know what that is. But we all love spending time together, and we love the process.

Is John Wick franchise over?

John Wick: Chapter 5 – In August 2020, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer confirmed that a fifth film was also being developed. It was intended to be shot back-to-back with the fourth installment in early 2021, but in March 2021, Lionsgate opted to delay production and move forward with Chapter 4 first.

In May 2022, Stahelski stated that while Chapter 4 has some “conclusion” elements to the story, there would be a fifth installment to the franchise. Following the release of the fourth movie, the filmmaker stated that he and Reeves wanted to complete some other projects, acknowledging that he would like to gain additional experience as a director, before continuing forward with another movie.

Stahelski stated that though Chapters 4 and 5 were originally intended to be filmed back-to-back, he didn’t feel like he could create two meaningfully successful and separate installments, without some time between each project to grow as a filmmaker; stating that once Chapter 4 is released months later in Japan, he and Reeves will discuss and map out the future of the John Wick movies.

Why did Netflix remove John Wick?

There is no John Wick on Netflix at all and that’s because the Studio that created it doesn’t want it on Netflix right now; that’s the case in the Unites States of America. Any Studio has the right to remove their movies and even television shows from Netflix for it’s them paying Netflix to host them.
